Summer Cute Pet Contest Winner - TUFF!!

Congratulations to Tuff, the winner of our Summer Cute pet contest.

From his owner:"He is a 4 month old West Highland White Terrier. Tuff is the runt of his litter and at the age of 2 months he was diagnosed with polyradiculoneuritis which is a vaccine induced autoimmune disease. He was in ICU at Auburn University Small Animal Hospital for 5 days where he had a spinal tap and IV fluids because of the disease. Tuff is on Prednisone to help get his immune system back working correctly and so far he is acting like a puppy FINALLY! I orginally had picked out the biggest dog out of his litter and I am so glad that I didn't, because the girl that got him said she would have ended up with Tuff and would have had to put him down due to the expenses. He is very lucky to be alive due to the problems that he has been through that started when he was 7 weeks old. He is a very and loveable puppy and so darn cute!"

Thank you to everyone who sent in the pictures of their pets.  The decisions were very difficult and took us a while to choose.

Summer Pet Health Tips: Heat Stroke

Heatstroke Warning Signs:

• Heavy panting
• Rapid breathing
• Excessive drooling
• Bright red gums and tongue
• Standing 4-square, posting or spreading out in an attempt to maintain balance

Advanced Stages:

• White or blue gums
• Lethargy, unwillingness to move
• Uncontrollable urination or defecation
• Labored, noisy breathing
• Shock

Cool the dog down by:

• Apply rubbing alcohol to the dog's paw pads
• Apply ice packs to the groin area
• Hose down with water
• Allow the dog to lick ice chips or drink a small amount of water
• Offer Pedialyte to restore electrolytes.
